Genre and Audience research

I have looked at the BFI film forever statistical yearbook 2014 and i have looked at chapters 4 and 15. i looked at the trends and patterns in the UK film genres at the box office and the preferences amongst different audience types.

Chapter 4

1)Which 3 genres were most successful at the UK box office?

- The most successful genres at the UK box office was animations,action and comedy.

2)Which 3 genres were the least popular or successful at the UK box office?

- The least popular genres at the uk box office was war, documentary and romance.

3)Which film genre had the most films released in 2013-14?

- Comedy had the most films released.

4)How many films in this genre were made in 2013-14?

- 153 comedy films were made and it was 21.9% of all releases.

5)How many animated films were made?

-33 animated films were made and it was 4.7% of all releases.

6)How many Action films were released?

-47 action films were released and it was 6.7% of all releases.

7)What does this information about genre tell you about?

-Film production: the production of films was high as not the most released genres are the most successful. The most successful film production was animation.

Chapter 15

1)Which age group made up the largest proportion of cinema admissions in the UK?

-15-24 aged group largest audience had the largest proportion of cinema admissions.

2)Which comedy film was the most successful with this age group?

- The Hangover part III

3)Which film was most popular with over 50s?

- Quartet in 2012 was the most popular film for the target audience of over 50s and it was a comedy drama.

4)Which Genres were most popular with men?

-The most popular genres with men were Thriller, Action and Comedy.

5)Which genres were most popular with women?

- the most popular genres with women were they prefer a boarder range of genres.

6)UK films appealed most to which audience type?

-It appealed mostly to female audience as they had a wider preference for UK films in 2013.

7)which 3 films were most popular with the 7-14 age group? What does this tell us about their preferred genre?

-The 3 films most popular for 7-14 year old were One direction: this is us, Wreck-it Ralph and Despicable me 2. The most preferred genre of films was animation for the 7-14 year old.

8)Which 3 films most popular with the 35-44 age group were Frozen, The Croods and jack and the Giant slayer. why might this be and how does this contribute to animation being the most successful genre at the box office?

-This is a age group where they generally have kids aged around 7-14. The reason for them attending animation films is probably there going in the cinema with there kids and younger people prefer animation films.

9)Which 3 films were most popular with the 25-34 age group?

-The most popular film with this aged group were Django unchained, Fast and Furious 6 and Rush.

10)Which films were most popular with middle class audiences (C1 and C2)? 

-The most popular films for the C1 class were Rush, Captain Phillips and Gravity.
-The most popular films for the C2 class were Oz the great and powerful, Fast and Furious and Despicable me 2.

11)Look at the tables for popular films in London and Scotland, what differences are there and what conclusions can you make about the types of films they appear to prefer?

- In London the most popular films were Django Unchained, Fast and Furious 6 and Gravity. They prefer genres such as Western, Sci-fi and Action.

-In Scotland the most popular films were Sunshine on Leith, Filth and Star Treck. They preferred genres like Comedy, Action Adventure and Comedy Drama.
